The Secret to Staying Healthy During Winter

Winter is a wonderful time for hibernation and a great opportunity for relaxation and reflection. We enjoy the opportunity to rug up in our winter woollies, drag out the hot water bottle and sip hot chocolates in front of the fire. But winter doesn’t have to be an excuse for over indulgence, sedentary behaviour and packing on the kilos.

So take your rest and stay warm but remember the basics:

Keep your fluid intake up
Don’t confuse thirst for hunger. The thirst mechanism is even less sensitive in winter so simply make it a habit to drink 2 litres of water a day.

Watch your calories
Instead of adding fats and carbs to your diet in order to feel comforted, try adding warming herbs such as ginger and cinnamon and small amounts of chili. These give you internal fire without the thousands of extra calories.

Exercise
You may need to alter your exercise regime to adjust to the cooler weather but don’t miss out. The National Guidelines are now at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity, all or most days of the week.

Take your supplements
When it comes to colds and flu’s prevention is much more comfortable than cure. So remember the essentials: Garlic, Vitamin C and Antioxidants.
